A celebration turned tragic on Monday when a car plowed into crowds of Liverpool fans during a parade honoring their team’s Premier League title. The incident left 27 people hospitalized, including four children, with two individuals in serious condition.
The joyous atmosphere in Liverpool quickly shifted as the vehicle rammed into a large group of supporters in the northwest English city. Police have arrested a 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area, believed to be the driver. Authorities emphasized that they are not treating the incident as terrorism-related.
“We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it,” temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims told reporters. “The incident is not being treated as terrorism.”
Emergency services responded swiftly, treating 20 people at the scene. Four individuals were trapped under the vehicle and had to be rescued by firefighters. Disturbing videos circulating on social media captured the moment people were thrown into the air upon impact.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his concern on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “My thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” he said, describing the scenes as “appalling.”
The community is rallying around the victims as investigations continue. Officials urge anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward to assist with the inquiry.
