The European Union (EU) is staying firm on its commitment to strike a trade deal with the United States, even as tariff tensions rise. Maros Sefcovic, the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, emphasized the EU’s dedication in a recent post on social media platform X.
“The European Commission remains fully committed to constructive and focused efforts at pace towards an EU-U.S. deal,” Sefcovic wrote, assuring that Brussels will continue constant communication with Washington.
His statement came after discussions with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The talks aim to navigate the challenges posed by recent tariff threats.
Last Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed frustration over stalled negotiations, stating the talks were “going nowhere.” He threatened to impose a 50% tariff on all EU imports starting June 1. In response, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reached out to Trump on Sunday. Following their conversation, Trump agreed to postpone the tariff increase until July 9.
Economists and market analysts are concerned about the unpredictability of U.S. trade policies. Many believe that such volatility can undermine confidence in the U.S. as a reliable trading partner.
