China Urges Russia and Ukraine to Maintain Momentum in Peace Talks

China has called on Russia and Ukraine to keep up the momentum in their peace negotiations, emphasizing that escalating the conflict will only prolong the suffering. Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, addressed the UN Security Council on Friday, urging all parties to foster an environment conducive to dialogue.

“An increasing number of weapons with greater lethality are appearing on the battlefield. This escalation only intensifies confrontation and extends the war,” Geng said. “It’s not helpful for achieving a ceasefire and ending the conflict. We urge all parties to actively create conditions and provide support for peace talks.”

Rejecting Accusations

Geng also responded to criticism directed at China, dismissing allegations that China has provided lethal weapons to any party involved in the conflict. “China has never supplied lethal weapons to any side in the conflict and strictly controls dual-use items,” he stated. “We firmly oppose any unfounded accusations and political manipulation.”

The Chinese envoy called on the United States to focus on diplomatic efforts rather than engaging in a “blame game.” He stated, “The U.S. bears significant responsibility for the outbreak and continuation of the conflict. It should make efforts toward an early end to the conflict instead of spreading misinformation about China.”

Commitment to Peace

China reiterated its consistent position on the Ukraine issue, advocating for dialogue and a political solution. “Since the crisis began, China has been promoting negotiations and has maintained contact with both Russia and Ukraine,” Geng emphasized. “Together with the Global South and the wider international community, China is willing to play a constructive role in seeking real peace.”

Recent developments, including direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul and agreements on prisoner exchanges, have been welcomed by China. “These positive steps towards peace are encouraging,” Geng noted. “We support all efforts that contribute to de-escalation and a political settlement.”

Call for Humanitarian Compliance

Addressing the humanitarian aspect of the conflict, Geng urged all parties to abide by international humanitarian law. “Parties to the conflict should refrain from attacking civilians and civilian infrastructure under any circumstances,” he said.
