After months of conflict, Ukrainian and Russian officials have resumed peace negotiations in Istanbul, Türkiye. Delegations from both nations met on Monday at the historic Ciragan Palace, hoping to find a path toward ending the ongoing war.
The Ukrainian team, led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, is expected to present a detailed plan for lasting peace. According to reports, the proposal includes several key points:
- No limits on Ukraine’s future military capabilities after a peace deal.
- No international recognition of Russian control over Ukrainian territories occupied by Russian forces.
- Compensation from Russia to Ukraine for damages caused by the conflict.
The proposal also suggests that the current front lines will be the starting point for discussions on territorial issues.
Representing Russia is Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky, who is set to hold multiple meetings during the talks. However, details about other attendees remain unclear.
The renewed negotiations come after a weekend of intense military actions. Ukraine launched significant attacks targeting Russian long-range bombers in Siberia and other military installations. In response, Russia deployed 472 drones over Ukraine, marking the highest number used in a single night since the conflict began.
The idea of direct talks was initially proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He indicated that Russia would prepare a memorandum outlining a potential peace agreement and would consider a ceasefire once that document was discussed. Ukraine has been awaiting Russia’s draft memorandum, and Russian officials have stated that they will respond soon.
Earlier talks in May resulted in the largest prisoner exchange of the war but failed to produce a ceasefire or peace agreement. Both sides are now returning to the negotiating table with hopes of making real progress toward ending the hostilities.
