Li Xiaohui and Wang Ziying of China battled fiercely but ultimately finished runners-up in the wheelchair women’s doubles at the French Open on Friday. They were defeated by Japan’s Yui Kamiji and South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane with a scoreline of 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 at Roland Garros in Paris.
Earlier this year, Li and Wang made history by securing China’s first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. In Paris, they started strong, clinching the first set 6-4. However, Kamiji and Montjane mounted a comeback in the second set, capitalizing on errors to take it 7-5 and level the match.
The decisive match tie-break saw the seasoned finalists maintain their momentum, ultimately winning 10-7 and claiming their second French Open title.
“Failure is the mother of success,” Wang reflected after the match. “We have room to improve and will learn from this experience. Although we lost the final, we can gain valuable insights.”
“We’ve gained much experience reaching the finals at both the Australian Open and the French Open,” Li added. “We’ll train hard and aim to perform better in upcoming competitions.”
In the women’s singles semifinal, Li also faced Kamiji. The Japanese player prevailed in a hard-fought match, winning 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4. Kamiji will face Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands in the final.
