Haaland Strikes Again as Norway Dominates Italy in World Cup Qualifier

Erling Haaland continued his sensational form by scoring as Norway defeated Italy 3-0 in a historic FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday. This marks the first time in 25 years that Norway has beaten Italy, delighting fans at Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo, including King Harald V of Norway.

Haaland netted his 41st goal in 42 appearances for the national team. The striker skillfully collected a through ball from playmaker Martin Ødegaard, maneuvered past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and scored Norway’s third goal just before halftime.

Norway’s victory keeps them unbeaten in Europe Group I, with three wins in three games, including impressive triumphs over Moldova (5-0) and Israel (4-2). The team’s youthful energy was on full display, with 20-year-old Antonio Nusa shining as a constant threat to the Italian defense.

Alexander Sørloth opened the scoring, receiving a precise pass from Nusa and firing a left-footed shot past Donnarumma. Nusa then doubled the lead, showcasing his skills by slipping past two defenders and delivering a powerful shot from inside the box.

Italy, missing several regulars and struggling to find form, failed to impress. Key players like defenders Alessandro Buongiorno and Mattia Gabbia, midfielder Manuel Locatelli, and forward Moise Kean were out due to injuries. The defensive line, led by Diego Coppola in a three-man setup, could not contain Norway’s attack.

The Azzurri are under pressure after missing out on the last two World Cups. Winning the group is crucial for direct qualification to the 2026 tournament in North America, as second place leads to the playoffs—a stage that has haunted Italy in recent campaigns.

Norway will face Estonia next, aiming to extend their perfect run, while Italy hosts Moldova in hopes of reviving their qualifying campaign.
