China Pledges Commitment to Multilateralism at UN Conference

China’s Vice President Han Zheng has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to multilateralism and deepening cooperation with the United Nations. Speaking at the third UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, Han emphasized China’s readiness to seize the opportunity of the UN’s 80th anniversary to contribute to world peace and global development.

“In these turbulent and complex times, it is crucial for all nations to uphold and defend the authority of the United Nations,” Han said, quoting President Xi Jinping. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the UN-centered international system, the international order underpinned by international law, and the principles of the UN Charter.

Han noted that President Xi had mandated him to lead the Chinese delegation at the conference, showcasing China’s firm support for multilateralism and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised China’s longstanding support for the United Nations, calling the nation a key pillar in promoting global sustainable development. “China is a vital partner of the United Nations in upholding multilateralism and addressing global challenges,” Guterres said.

Both leaders expressed a commitment to deepen cooperation in tackling issues such as marine biodiversity and climate change, aiming for the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Han also conveyed China’s appreciation for the UN’s unwavering adherence to the one-China principle, hoping that UN bodies remain vigilant against attempts to distort and challenge the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758. Guterres affirmed that the UN maintains a clear stance on the one-China principle and will continue to observe the resolution.
