France and the Ocean Protecting Marine Life for a Sustainable Future

France Leads Charge at UN Ocean Conference to Protect Marine Life

France and Costa Rica are co-hosting the third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France, from June 9 to 13, 2025, under the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.

As the host nation, France is showcasing its rich and diverse marine ecosystems, along with its efforts in marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, and developing a blue economy.

The Mediterranean Sea, a vital part of France’s natural heritage, is home to vibrant marine life like the Posidonia seagrass meadows, often called the “pearl of the Mediterranean.” These underwater meadows play a crucial role in carbon storage and providing habitat for countless marine species, including schools of mullets that swim above them.

Environmentalists in France are working tirelessly to protect marine life. Teams have been monitoring and safeguarding cetaceans, such as dolphins and whales, in the waters near La Ciotat. These initiatives underscore France’s commitment to preserving marine biodiversity for future generations.

The conference brings together nations, organizations, and individuals from around the world to collaborate on innovative solutions for ocean conservation. By accelerating action and mobilizing all actors, the goal is to ensure a sustainable future for the ocean and all who depend on it.
