China has welcomed a United Nations resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and urgent humanitarian aid for the region. On Thursday, Fu Cong, China’s representative to the UN, praised the resolution, saying it reflects the overwhelming desire for peace.
“The resolution sends a strong message and shows unity among UN members,” Fu said.
He expressed disappointment that the UN Security Council couldn’t pass a similar resolution last week due to a U.S. veto, and urged Israel to stop its military actions in Gaza.
“Each day, many innocent lives are lost,” Fu noted. “No excuse can justify the killing of civilians.”
Fu emphasized that an immediate and lasting ceasefire is crucial to save lives and secure the release of hostages. He criticized the blockade preventing humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza, where the UN has warned of an imminent large-scale famine.
“Denying people access to basic necessities violates international law. It’s cruel and unacceptable,” he stated. “China strongly opposes using humanitarian aid as a weapon.”
He called on Israel to lift the blockade, restore access to aid, and support the efforts of the UN and humanitarian agencies.
Fu highlighted the importance of implementing UN resolutions and following international law. “The international community must act to stop violations and ensure accountability,” he said.
China pledged to work with others to achieve a ceasefire, ease the humanitarian crisis, and seek a lasting solution to the Palestinian issue.
The UN General Assembly resolution was adopted with 149 votes in favor, 12 against, and 19 abstentions. China voted in favor.
