Tottenham Hotspur has appointed Thomas Frank as their new manager, the club announced on Thursday. The 51-year-old Danish coach joins Spurs after nearly a decade at fellow Premier League club Brentford.
Frank replaces Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed last week despite leading Tottenham to their first trophy in 17 years with a victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final.
“In Thomas, we are appointing one of the most progressive and innovative head coaches within the game,” the club said in a statement. “He has a proven track record in player and squad development, and we look forward to him leading the team as we prepare for the season ahead.”
Since joining Brentford in December 2016, Frank has built a reputation for tactical flexibility and developing players, especially those who have flown under the radar or struggled at other clubs.
At Tottenham, he will take charge of a squad of higher caliber, although the team finished below Brentford in the Premier League last season. Frank will also be managing in the UEFA Champions League for the first time, with one of his initial matches set against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain at the UEFA Super Cup.
Some might see the appointment as a gamble, considering Frank has yet to win a trophy in his managerial career. However, Tottenham’s recent history with high-profile managers like Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho shows that elite pedigrees don’t always guarantee success. Frank brings extensive Premier League experience and a fresh approach that could revitalize the North London club.
Under Frank’s leadership, Brentford have been in the top flight since 2021 and have consistently exceeded expectations. Tottenham highlighted Frank’s ability to have his former team “significantly outperforming expectations for an extended period of time.”
