The death toll from Thursday’s Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat has risen to 274, officials confirmed on Saturday.
Initially, 241 passengers and crew were reported dead, but the casualty count has increased to include 33 people on the ground. According to The Times of India, these additional victims were likely individuals on the campus of Ahmedabad’s BJ Medical College when the crash occurred.
In response to the tragedy, the Indian government has established a high-level committee to investigate the incident. As reported by The Hindustan Times, the committee will be headed by the home secretary and will include representatives from both state and central governments, all holding ranks not below joint secretary.
The committee is expected to deliver its findings within three months, aiming to uncover the causes of the crash and recommend measures to prevent future incidents.
