London became a cultural melting pot on Friday as the “Dialogue among Civilizations: Chinese Tea and Costume” event showcased the rich heritage of Chinese culture to a captivated audience. Co-hosted by the Chinese Embassy in the United Kingdom and the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, the event marked the inaugural International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations.
The evening kicked off with a video address from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who emphasized the importance of promoting dialogue among civilizations in today’s turbulent world. He highlighted that mutual understanding and respect are key to overcoming global challenges.
Chinese Ambassador to the UK Zheng Zeguang delivered a compelling speech, noting that both China and the UK are representatives of rich and ancient civilizations. “We must engage in mutual respect and deeper cultural exchange,” he said, firmly rejecting notions of a “clash of civilizations” and unilateralism. He urged both nations to work together on global issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, and public health.
The event offered attendees a taste of tradition with a Tang-style Chinese tea ceremony, providing a multi-sensory experience of hospitality and culture. Professor Alan Macfarlane captivated the audience with a comparison of Chinese and Western tea cultures, expressing hope that tea could serve as a bridge for friendship and harmony between nations.
A highlight of the evening was the “Silk Road Symbiosis” fashion presentation, curated by the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology. The showcase featured Chinese attire that blended historical depth with modern creativity, leaving attendees visibly moved by the elegant convergence of tradition and innovation.
Over 100 guests from China and the UK attended the event, which served as a graceful moment of cultural dialogue. Through the timeless languages of tea and textile, the gathering enriched mutual understanding and appreciation between the two nations.
