UN Chief Urges Immediate Ceasefire Between Israel and Iran

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.

“I remain profoundly alarmed by the ongoing military escalation in the Middle East between Israel and Iran,” Guterres said in a statement on Wednesday. “I reiterate my call for immediate de-escalation leading to a ceasefire.”

He warned that the expansion of the conflict could have devastating consequences not only for those involved but for the entire region and international peace and security.

“I strongly appeal to all to avoid any further internationalization of the conflict. Any additional military interventions could have enormous consequences,” he emphasized.

Guterres condemned the strikes that have led to the tragic loss of civilian lives, injuries, and damage to homes and critical infrastructure.

He stressed that diplomacy remains the best and only way to address concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program and regional security issues. “The UN Charter remains our shared framework to save people from the scourge of war,” he said. “I urge all member states to comply fully with the Charter and international law, including international humanitarian law.”

The conflict intensified on Friday when Israel launched surprise attacks on Iran, including strikes on nuclear facilities. Iran immediately retaliated with missile and drone attacks. Since then, the two countries have exchanged strikes daily.

The international community watches with deep concern as tensions rise, hoping for a swift resolution through diplomatic means to prevent further escalation.
