IOC President-elect Coventry Praises China’s Olympic Legacy Efforts

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President-elect Kirsty Coventry has praised China’s commitment to nurturing its Olympic legacy. Speaking from the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, Coventry reflected on her own Olympic journey and highlighted China’s role in shaping the future of the Games.

Just days before officially taking office, the Zimbabwean swimming legend held an online media roundtable where she recalled watching the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics at just eight years old. “Watching the Games in my family’s living room was transformative,” she said. “It inspired me to pursue my dreams in swimming.”

Coventry, a two-time Olympic champion, noted how Beijing has made history as the world’s first “Dual Olympic City,” hosting both the Summer Games in 2008 and the Winter Games in 2022. She expressed admiration for China’s efforts to utilize its Olympic venues and infrastructure long after the events have ended.

“China’s work in maintaining and repurposing its Olympic facilities is impressive,” Coventry remarked. “It’s not just about hosting the Games; it’s about creating a lasting legacy that benefits future generations.”

She believes that China’s dedication serves as a model for other host countries. “By investing in sustainable development, China continues to influence the future of the Olympics,” she added.

Coventry’s enthusiasm underscores the potential impact of the Olympic movement on young people worldwide, especially in the Global South. “The Olympics have the power to inspire and unite,” she said. “It’s important for us to build on that legacy.”
