MIYAVI’s Mission: Bringing Joy to Refugees Through Music

June 20 marks World Refugee Day, a time to honor the strength and resilience of refugees worldwide. Japanese rock guitarist and singer MIYAVI, a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), is using his music to make a difference.

In a recent interview, MIYAVI shared how his humanitarian work fuels his passion. “It’s also the influential power and how you use that power for the community, for the world, for the future,” he said.

As the first Japanese national to hold the position of UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, appointed in 2017, MIYAVI has been a vocal advocate for refugees. He spoke candidly about the challenges humanitarian organizations face today, including declining global funding to the UN. “When the economy goes down, we all suffer,” he noted, calling for increased donations and support from around the world.

MIYAVI also reminisced about his first visit to a refugee camp and how he brings joy to children through his music. “Seeing their smiles when I play is the greatest reward,” he shared.

Through his efforts, MIYAVI hopes to inspire others to use their talents to support those in need. “We all have the power to make a positive impact,” he said.
