Peru Halts Reduction of Nazca Lines Protected Area After Backlash

Lima, Peru — Peru’s government has reversed its decision to cut the protected area surrounding the iconic Nazca Lines, following widespread criticism from archaeologists and heritage advocates.

The Ministry of Culture initially planned to reduce the buffer zone around the ancient geoglyphs, sparking fears over the potential damage to one of the world’s most mysterious archaeological treasures.

Located in the arid deserts of southern Peru, the Nazca Lines are a series of enormous ancient designs etched into the ground, depicting animals, plants, and geometric shapes. Created by the Nazca culture between 500 BCE and 500 CE, they have puzzled researchers for decades due to their massive scale and unknown purpose.

The proposed reduction of the protected area raised alarms among experts who warned that encroaching development and human activity could irreparably harm the site.

“The Nazca Lines are not just lines on the ground; they’re a testament to human ingenuity and a window into ancient civilizations,” said Dr. Maria Rodriguez, an archaeologist specializing in pre-Columbian cultures.

Public outcry and petitions from both local communities and international organizations pressured the government to reconsider.

The reversal ensures that the current boundaries safeguarding the Nazca Lines remain intact, preserving the area from potential threats such as mining, urban expansion, and tourism-related damage.

“This decision reflects our commitment to preserving Peru’s rich cultural heritage,” the Ministry of Culture stated in an official announcement. “We recognize the importance of the Nazca Lines not only for Peru but for humanity as a whole.”

The Nazca Lines are a UNESCO World Heritage site and continue to attract visitors and scholars from around the globe, eager to unlock the secrets of this ancient marvel.
