Cambodia has confirmed that Thailand has closed all border crossings between the two countries, a move that could significantly impact travelers and traders in the region.
Cambodia’s Police Lieutenant General Sok Veasna, director general of the General Department of Immigration, announced that the Thai military had unilaterally shut down the entire border. “We received official notification about the closure of all crossings only on the morning of June 24,” he said, expressing concern over the sudden decision.
This development follows an announcement by Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin stating that Thailand would tighten its border controls with Cambodia to combat transnational crime. After a high-level meeting at the government house, the prime minister outlined plans to restrict cross-border travel for both vehicles and individuals, including limiting operating hours at checkpoints.
Under the new measures, crossings in seven provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border will be limited to essential travel, such as for students, medical patients, and the transportation of vital goods. Thailand also plans to halt exports of goods, particularly fuel and electricity, that may support illegal activities across the border. The government is considering suspending fuel shipments to Cambodia suspected of being used in unlawful operations.
Additionally, internet services and submarine internet cables connected to Cambodia’s government and military entities will be suspended, according to the prime minister.
Following the announcement, the Thai military implemented strengthened measures at border crossings with Cambodia, allowing only essential and humanitarian travel.
In response, Cambodia stated that it would stop fuel and gas imports from Thailand and advised its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Thailand.
These escalating actions have raised concerns among people living in border areas, many of whom rely on cross-border trade and travel. The restrictions could disrupt daily life, impacting everything from business operations to family visits.
The situation underscores the complexities of regional security and the balancing act between combating crime and maintaining open borders for legitimate activities. As tensions rise, residents on both sides are hoping for a swift resolution that will restore normalcy and uphold the strong ties between the two nations.
