Chinese Envoy Accuses U.S. and Israel of Violating UN Charter with Iran Strikes

Geneva, Switzerland — Chinese envoy to the United Nations office at Geneva, Chen Xu, on Monday condemned recent military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran, asserting that such actions violate the principles of the UN Charter and threaten international peace.

Speaking at a side event commemorating the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter during the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Chen emphasized the foundational role of the UN Charter in establishing the modern international order and norms of international relations. “The cause of international peace has been severely challenged,” he remarked.

Chen criticized the military actions, stating, “The strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.” He also pointed to the U.S. policy of “withdrawing from groups and cutting funding” as a serious blow to multilateralism.

Highlighting China’s stance, Chen noted that his country advocates for true multilateralism and insists on resolving differences through dialogue and consultation. “We promote peace as a driver for development and human rights and support the steady advancement of UN reforms,” he said.

He called on all nations to firmly support the role of the United Nations and to work together with China to safeguard world peace, promote common development, and ensure that human rights are enjoyed by all.

The event, hosted by the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter, brought together representatives from various countries aiming to reinforce the importance of the UN Charter amid rising global tensions.
