First African Woman Leads IOC: Kirsty Coventry Aims to Keep Olympics Youthful

Kirsty Coventry made history on Monday as she officially took office as the first female and first African president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). In her inaugural interview with China Media Group (CMG), Coventry shared her vision for the future of the Olympics and her immediate plans as the new Olympic boss.

Coventry, 41, succeeds Thomas Bach, who served as IOC President for 12 years. Reflecting on her transition, she spoke fondly of the three months they worked together after her election, describing the experience as “wonderful.”

As the first IOC President born in the 1980s, Coventry emphasized the importance of keeping the organization “youthful and vibrant” to ensure the Olympic Games remain appealing to the younger generation. “It’s crucial that we stay connected with the youth, as they are the future of sports,” she remarked.

Looking ahead, Coventry expressed enthusiasm about strengthening partnerships with global broadcasters like CMG, which has played a significant role in bringing major international sports events, including the Olympic Games, to audiences worldwide. “I look forward to further collaboration with CMG to promote the Olympic spirit across the globe,” she said.
