Palmeiras and Inter Miami Draw 2-2, Both Advance to Club World Cup Round of 16
In front of an electrifying crowd at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, Palmeiras and Inter Miami battled to a thrilling 2-2 draw on Monday night, securing their places in the FIFA Club World Cup round of 16.
The historic Brazilian club Palmeiras made a remarkable comeback after trailing for most of the game. Mauricio netted the equalizer in the 87th minute, igniting celebrations among the visiting fans. Earlier, Inter Miami had taken a commanding 2-0 lead with goals from Tadeo Allende in the 16th minute and veteran striker Luis Suárez in the 65th minute.
Palmeiras turned the tide with impactful second-half substitutions. Paulinho sparked hope with a goal in the 80th minute, setting the stage for Mauricio’s late heroics. The draw was sufficient for both teams to advance from Group A, having entered the match tied atop the standings with four points each.
Global superstar Lionel Messi, who celebrated his 39th birthday on Tuesday, had several opportunities but couldn’t find the back of the net, despite the crowd chanting his name throughout the game. Messi was visibly frustrated after Palmeiras’ equalizer, as Inter Miami’s lead slipped away in the closing minutes.
With the result, Palmeiras topped the group on goal difference and will face fellow Brazilian side Botafogo in the round of 16. Inter Miami is set to take on Group B winners Paris Saint-Germain, Messi’s former club, in a highly anticipated matchup. Notably, Inter Miami is the only Major League Soccer (MLS) club to advance, after Los Angeles FC and Seattle were eliminated.
Porto and Al Ahly Eliminated After 4-4 Thriller
In another high-scoring affair, Porto and Al Ahly played to a dramatic 4-4 draw at MetLife Stadium. Despite the excitement, both teams were eliminated from the tournament due to goal difference.
Porto’s Pepe scored a crucial goal in the 89th minute to level the match. Teammates Rodrigo Mora, William Gomes, and Samu Aghehowa also found the net for the Portuguese side. Al Ahly’s Wessam Abou Ali dazzled with a hat trick, thrilling the sea of red jerseys in the stands.
The match was a back-and-forth spectacle, with both teams pushing for a late winner. Porto dominated possession but Al Ahly created more chances, outshooting their opponents 22-14. Despite several close calls in stoppage time, neither team could secure the decisive goal needed to advance.
