China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, has called on all parties to sincerely uphold the recently established ceasefire between Israel and Iran. “No more deceptions this time,” Fu said in response to a question from CMG reporter Xu Dezhi ahead of a UN Security Council meeting in New York on Wednesday.
The ceasefire took effect on Tuesday after both countries exchanged missile barrages in the final moments before it began. Following 12 days of intense air strikes, both Israel and Iran have lifted civilian restrictions, and no further air strikes have been reported.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also urged both nations to fully respect the ceasefire. “The fighting must stop. The people of the two countries have already suffered too much,” Guterres posted on X on Tuesday. He expressed his “sincere hope” that the ceasefire could extend to other parts of the region.
