Chinese Delegation Attends Organization of American States Meeting

China Calls for Stronger Ties with Latin America at OAS Meeting

China’s Ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng, has called for enhanced cooperation between China and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries. Speaking at the 55th Regular Session of the Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, Xie emphasized that China and LAC nations share common aspirations for development and modernization.

“The Chinese mainland and LAC countries, as part of the Global South, have a shared vision for progress,” Xie said during the Dialogue with Permanent Observers on Wednesday. He highlighted the importance of solidarity, mutual respect, and people-centered development.

Xie noted that over the past decade, Chinese President Xi Jinping has visited the LAC region six times. Last month, at the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, President Xi announced the launch of five key programs: Solidarity, Development, Civilization, Peace, and People-to-People Connectivity. These initiatives aim to chart the course for long-term China-LAC relations.

Amid global challenges like rising protectionism and confrontation, Xie urged LAC countries to work with China to set an example for South-South cooperation. He stressed that China-LAC cooperation carries no geopolitical calculations or political strings and does not pressure nations to choose sides. “Our cooperation does not target any third party and should remain free from external disruptions,” he added.

Xie reaffirmed China’s support for LAC countries in safeguarding their sovereignty and independence, opposing power politics and external interference. He expressed hope that LAC nations would continue to uphold the one-China principle and support China’s efforts to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The OAS General Assembly serves as a platform for member states and observers to discuss regional issues and strengthen collaboration. China’s participation underscores its commitment to deepening ties with LAC countries and promoting shared development goals.
