Preparations for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games are well underway, with venues nearly ready to welcome athletes from around the world. Andrea Varnier, CEO of Fondazione Milano Cortina 2026, shared exciting updates during an interview with China Media Group (CMG) on Thursday.
“Our venues are almost complete, and the test events we’ve conducted so far have been incredibly successful,” Varnier announced. “While there’s still work to do in some areas up until the final moments, we’re very satisfied with the progress we’ve made.”
Varnier, who previously served as one of the directors for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, highlighted the significant advancements in technology over the past two decades. “One of the major differences between now and then is technology, especially cybersecurity,” he explained. “We’ve invested heavily in this sector because it’s essential to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the Games.”
In a move towards sustainability and efficiency, many existing venues will be reused for the 2026 Winter Games. Varnier hopes this approach will set a new standard for future host cities. “By repurposing facilities, we’re minimizing environmental impact and promoting a legacy that lasts beyond the Games,” he said.
Offering a glimpse into the much-anticipated opening ceremony, Varnier hinted at plans to involve as many athletes and venues as possible. “We want the celebration to extend beyond just the main stadium,” he shared. “It’s about uniting everyone in this wonderful event.”
