Moscow Formally Recognizes Afghan Interim Government

Russia Officially Recognizes Afghanistan’s Interim Government

In a landmark move, Russia has officially recognized Afghanistan’s interim government, marking a significant step in diplomatic relations between the two nations. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan on Thursday.

Dmitry Zhirnov, the Russian ambassador to Afghanistan, met with Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting minister of foreign affairs of Afghanistan, to formally deliver Moscow’s decision. According to a statement from the Afghan Foreign Ministry, Zhirnov described the recognition as a “historic step” towards deepening ties and enhancing cooperation.

Welcoming Russia’s decision, Muttaqi expressed optimism, calling it a new phase of positive relations, mutual respect, and constructive engagement. He emphasized the importance of strengthening diplomatic links for the benefit of both countries.

This development follows Russia’s earlier announcement in April to upgrade Afghanistan’s representation to the ambassadorial level. In July, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko received copies of Letters of Credence from the newly appointed Afghan ambassador to Russia.

Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov also confirmed the recognition, highlighting Russia’s commitment to supporting stability and development in the region.
