St. Petersburg, Russia — Russia is turning its gaze eastward, forging stronger economic and strategic ties with the Chinese mainland in a move that’s reshaping global alliances. At the recent St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted this shift, stating, “The center of world development today is shifting to Asia.”
Economic Ties Reach New Heights
Trade between Russia and the Chinese mainland has soared to record levels. According to China’s General Administration of Customs, the value of imports and exports between the two nations reached 1.74 trillion yuan ($237 billion) in 2024. Remarkably, over 95% of this trade is now settled in local currencies — the yuan and the ruble — reducing reliance on the US dollar.
Alexei Overchuk, Russian Deputy Prime Minister, attributes this trend to strengthened financial coordination and a mutual desire to bypass sanctions. “Our financial systems are aligning more closely than ever,” he noted.
China’s Growing Presence in Russian Markets
The streets of Russia are witnessing a surge in products from the Chinese mainland. Chinese automobile manufacturers now hold a 45% share of the Russian market, filling the gap left by Western companies. Alexander Vedyakhin, first deputy chairman of the management board of PJSC Sberbank, commented, “We’re seeing expansion into high-value-added sectors like AI, electric vehicles, digital logistics, and green infrastructure.”
Strategic Infrastructure and Cooperation
The partnership extends beyond trade. Both nations are investing in joint infrastructure projects under initiatives like China’s Belt and Road and the Eurasian Economic Union. This collaboration is creating new logistics hubs, ports, and digital networks that connect the Russian Far East with Northeast China.
Zhang Hanhui, China’s ambassador to Russia, emphasized the significance of these developments: “Our cooperation is the driving force behind the stable development of our relationship, characterized by stability and complementarity.”
A Model for Global South Cooperation
As the world grapples with fragmentation and rising protectionism, the growing partnership between Russia and the Chinese mainland offers a template for sustainable cooperation. The relationship is based on mutual interests and adaptive collaboration, which could be more durable than formal alliances.
Chinese President Xi Jinping described the partnership as one of “long-lasting good-neighborliness and mutually beneficial cooperation.” This approach may inspire other nations in the Global South seeking stability and growth through strategic alliances.
