Zelenskyy and Trump Discuss Air Defense Amid Rising Russian Drone Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a significant conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday, focusing on bolstering Ukraine’s air defense capabilities as Russian drone attacks intensify.

In a message on Telegram, Zelenskyy emphasized the urgency of enhancing Ukraine’s ability to “defend the sky” amid escalating assaults. The leaders discussed joint defense production, purchases, and investments aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defenses.

“We had a very detailed discussion on joint production,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly address. “We need it, and America needs it.”

Ukraine has been seeking additional support from the United States, particularly more Patriot missile systems, which are crucial for defending cities from increasing Russian air strikes. A recent decision by Washington to suspend some weapon shipments has raised concerns in Kyiv about the nation’s defensive capabilities.

Germany has stepped in by exploring the purchase of Patriot air defense systems to help bridge the gap. Meanwhile, optimism remains that the supply of Patriot missiles from the U.S. could resume following what sources described as a “very good” conversation between Zelenskyy and Trump.

According to reports, the call between the two leaders lasted around 40 minutes. Trump reportedly promised to review the status of U.S. weapons intended for Ukraine and address any holds on shipments.

The dialogue came shortly after Trump expressed disappointment over a recent call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting a lack of progress. In response, Russia launched the largest drone attack on Kyiv since the conflict began, which Zelenskyy condemned as “deliberately massive and cynical.”

Trump also spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday, discussing Ukraine’s situation, the reinforcement of air defenses, and trade issues, as reported by Spiegel magazine.

Zelenskyy and Trump agreed to arrange a meeting between their teams to further strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses. The collaboration aims to enhance joint production efforts and ensure Ukraine is better equipped to protect its skies.
