In a strong stance against actions undermining international norms, BRICS nations have united to condemn unilateral sanctions that violate international law.
Meeting at the 17th BRICS Summit, leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa adopted a joint declaration titled “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance.” The declaration firmly opposes any unilateral coercive measures not authorized by the United Nations Security Council.
The BRICS leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the BRICS spirit and pledged to deepen cooperation under the expanded BRICS framework. This cooperation will focus on three core pillars: political and security collaboration, economic and financial engagement, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Expressing concerns over the increasing number of global trade restrictions, the leaders warned that rising tariffs, non-tariff measures, and other protectionist policies—especially those presented as environmental objectives—risk undermining global trade, disrupting supply chains, and destabilizing the outlook for international economic growth.
Recognizing the evolving nature of the group, BRICS leaders emphasized the need to adapt existing mechanisms to better reflect its expanded membership. They called for more efficient, responsive, inclusive, and consensus-based operations to ensure the group’s continued relevance and effectiveness.
The nations underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships with emerging markets and developing countries. They stressed that deeper cooperation within the Global South will enhance solidarity and promote genuine multilateralism that benefits all humanity.
The declaration also outlined unified positions on a wide range of global challenges, including artificial intelligence governance, climate action, technological innovation, global health cooperation, energy transition, cultural exchanges, and the peaceful use of outer space.
Looking ahead, India is set to assume the BRICS chairmanship in 2026 and will host the 18th BRICS Summit, continuing the group’s commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable global development.
