China’s love affair with pets is blossoming, with urban pet ownership reaching new heights. According to the 2025 China Pet Industry White Paper released by PetData, the pet population in China’s cities soared to 120 million in 2024, marking a 2.1% increase from the previous year.
But as more households welcome furry companions, a new challenge is emerging: a surge in pet-related allergies, particularly among cat and dog owners. A three-year survey conducted by Beijing Shijitan Hospital’s Allergy Center revealed that the percentage of patients allergic to cat dander rose to 12.5% between 2020 and 2022, up 0.7 percentage points from 2017 to 2019.
“We’ve noticed a significant uptick in allergy cases related to pets,” said Dr. Wang Xueyan, director of the Allergy Center at Beijing Shijitan Hospital. “While animals bring joy and companionship, it’s important to be aware of the health implications for some individuals.”
The trend in China mirrors a global pattern. Pet allergies are caused by proteins found in an animal’s dander (dead skin cells), saliva, or urine. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that allergies to cats and dogs affect 10% to 20% of the world’s population.
For those grappling with pet allergies, management is key. “If someone is allergic, separating the pet from the areas where they spend the most time can reduce symptoms,” Dr. Wang advised. She also noted that individuals with mild symptoms might still be able to keep their pets with proper precautions. However, she cautioned against ignoring symptoms: “Untreated allergies can progress to more serious conditions like asthma or even pulmonary heart disease.”
The discussion around pet allergies gains prominence as World Allergy Day approaches on July 8. Initiated by the World Health Organization and the World Allergy Organization, this annual event aims to raise awareness about allergy prevention and treatment. With the rise in pet ownership presenting new health considerations, the day serves as a timely reminder for urban residents in China and around the world to prioritize their health while enjoying the company of their animal friends.
