Trump Approves Weapons for Ukraine, Considers Sanctions on Russia

Trump Approves Weapons for Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he has approved sending additional defensive weapons to Ukraine, signaling a potential escalation in support amid rising tensions in the region.

“We’re sending some defensive weapons to Ukraine, and I’ve approved that,” Trump said during a cabinet meeting at the White House.

Ukraine Seeks Increased Support

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the approval and stated that he has ordered an expansion of contacts with the U.S. to secure critical military supplies, primarily focused on air defense systems.

“Today, I instructed the minister of defense and the commander in chief to intensify all contacts with the American side,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly video address. “We currently have all the necessary political statements and decisions, and we must implement them as quickly as possible to protect our people and positions.”

Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukraine and the U.S. are preparing for meetings between their military and political teams this week.

Russia’s Response

The Kremlin responded by stating it would take time to clarify the specifics of the U.S. weapons deliveries to Kyiv. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked, “There is a lot of contradictory information out there.”

Peskov added that sending weapons to Ukraine would only prolong the conflict and accused Europe of “pumping” Ukraine with armaments.

Escalating Tensions

Russia’s military has intensified air attacks on Ukrainian cities using drones and missiles in recent weeks. The conflict has led to significant casualties on both sides.

President Trump expressed his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the failure to implement a ceasefire aimed at securing peace in the region. “I’m not happy with Putin. I can tell you that much right now,” Trump said, noting the high number of casualties.

Possible Sanctions

Trump also stated he is considering supporting a bipartisan Senate bill that would impose sweeping sanctions on Russia, signaling a tougher stance amid the ongoing conflict.
