China and South Korea Clash to a Thrilling Draw in Women’s East Asian Cup Opener

In a match filled with excitement and late drama, China and South Korea played to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday in the opening game of the EAFF Women’s E-1 Football Championship, popularly known as the East Asian Cup.

China took an early lead in the 15th minute when Yao Wei unleashed a powerful strike from distance, catching the South Korean defense off guard. Determined to defend their home turf, South Korea intensified their pressing and created multiple opportunities. Their efforts paid off just before halftime, as Jang Sel-gi found the back of the net in stoppage time to level the score.

The second half saw both teams pushing for the advantage. In the 67th minute, Yao Wei showcased her versatility by heading an assist to Shao Ziqin, who nodded the ball home to put China ahead once more. The match seemed destined for a Chinese victory until deep into stoppage time, when Ji So-yun fired a stunning long-range shot to secure a dramatic equalizer for South Korea.

“We expected a tough game between two strong teams in Asia, especially under such challenging conditions,” said China’s head coach after the match. “It’s disappointing to concede goals in injury time of both halves, but I’m proud of our team’s effort.”

He added, “Playing away against a passionate home crowd is never easy. We were so close tonight, and I believe the players deserved to hold on for the win. This experience will build our confidence as we learn to maintain our lead against top opponents. Preparing for the upcoming Asian Cup, we need to focus on why we’re conceding late goals and work on tightening our defense.”

Veteran player Wang Shuang emphasized the team’s growth, saying, “Our squad is still young, and we need more time to build chemistry and improve our understanding on the field. We’ll give our all to perform well in the upcoming matches.”

The thrilling opener sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting tournament, with both teams eager to make their mark in the East Asian Cup.
