Berlin, Germany — Germany is calling on the European Union to take decisive action if ongoing negotiations with the United States fail to prevent a steep increase in tariffs. German Finance Minister Christian Lindner emphasized the need for a strong and unified response to protect Europe’s economy.
U.S. President Joe Biden has suggested the possibility of raising tariffs on European imports starting August 1, citing unsatisfactory progress in trade talks. The proposed 30% tariff hike has raised concerns across European capitals, with officials warning of a potential escalation in global trade tensions.
“If a fair negotiated solution does not succeed, then we must be prepared to implement countermeasures to safeguard jobs and businesses in Europe,” Lindner told local media on Sunday. He stressed that open dialogue remains the preferred path but underscored the importance of readiness.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed Lindner’s sentiments, stating that the EU is committed to finding a diplomatic solution but will not hesitate to act if necessary. “We will extend the suspension of our countermeasures until early August, but we are fully prepared to respond appropriately,” she said during a press briefing.
Trade experts warn that increased tariffs could have adverse effects on both economies, leading to higher prices for consumers and strained international relations. Juergen Hardt, a senior member of Germany’s Bundestag, expressed hope for a resolution, saying, “I’m betting that at least a partial agreement and a further postponement will be reached before August 1. High tariffs hurt everyone involved.”
The European Union continues to advocate for fair trade practices and mutual cooperation. As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on the negotiations that could shape the future of transatlantic trade.
