Former U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani on Wednesday to discuss efforts toward a Gaza ceasefire, according to reports.
Negotiators from Israel and Hamas have been engaged in ceasefire talks in Doha since July 6, focusing on a U.S.-backed proposal for a 60-day truce. The plan includes a phased release of hostages, withdrawal of Israeli troops from parts of Gaza, and discussions aimed at ending the longstanding conflict.
Steve Witkoff, Trump’s Middle East envoy, expressed optimism on Sunday about the ongoing negotiations in Qatar, a key mediator between the parties. “We are hopeful that these talks will lead to a lasting ceasefire and pave the way for peace in the region,” Witkoff said.
Despite the involvement of U.S., Qatari, and Egyptian mediators, significant differences remain. Israel and Hamas are reportedly divided over the extent of an Israeli withdrawal from the Palestinian enclave, a sticking point that continues to challenge progress.
The meeting between Trump and Sheikh Mohammed underscores international efforts to bring about a resolution. Qatar’s role as a mediator has been pivotal, given its connections with various parties involved in the conflict.
The Gaza Strip has been the center of a protracted conflict, impacting countless lives. The prospect of a ceasefire brings hope to many seeking peace and stability in the region.
