Fire at Newly Opened Iraqi Hypermarket Kills 69 in Kut

A devastating fire broke out Wednesday night at a hypermarket in Kut, the capital of Iraq’s Wasit Province, leaving at least 69 people dead and 11 others missing, according to local health authorities.

The blaze engulfed a five-story commercial building that housed a restaurant and the newly opened hypermarket, which had been in operation for only seven days, as per the Interior Ministry’s statement.

Civil defense teams worked tirelessly to control the fire and managed to rescue over 45 people trapped inside. Images from the aftermath reveal the charred remains of the Corniche Hypermarket, with rescue teams and security forces still on site.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident, dispatching Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari to the scene. Additionally, a medical team has been sent to assist in treating the injured.

Wasit Provincial Governor Mohammed Jameel al-Maihy declared three days of mourning for the victims. He pledged to hold accountable anyone responsible for the tragedy, promising to announce preliminary investigation results within 48 hours.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about safety measures in Iraq. Earlier in 2023, over 100 people lost their lives when a fire swept through a crowded wedding hall in a northern Iraqi town.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
