Scottie Scheffler Sets the Pace at the Open Championship with Stunning Second Round
Scottie Scheffler had no idea what was coming his way on Friday at the Open Championship. The American golfer warmed up in a short-sleeved shirt, but by the time he walked off the first green, the umbrella was out as the weather took a turn.
Despite the changing conditions at Royal Portrush, the World No. 1 delivered another relentless performance. Starting strong, Scheffler birdied three consecutive holes to close the gap and added two more down the stretch to seize the lead.
He narrowly missed a sensational finish, with a 15-foot putt on the 18th hole stopping just one turn away from dropping in for a final birdie. Nevertheless, he happily settled for a seven-under-par 64—his lowest round in a major tournament—to take a one-shot lead over England’s Matt Fitzpatrick.
"Overall, I’m hitting the ball solid," Scheffler said modestly after his round. "The tournament is only halfway done. I got off to a good start."
Scheffler made eight birdies during a wild afternoon marked by tumultuous weather. Sitting at 10-under-par 132, he’s now chasing the third leg of the Career Grand Slam.
Fitzpatrick was equally impressive, igniting his back nine with four straight birdies. A missed five-foot par putt on the 14th slowed his momentum, as did a missed three-foot birdie putt on the 17th, but he finished strong with a 66.
"I felt like every facet of my game was on today," Fitzpatrick said. "To take advantage of the opportunities I had out there was obviously really positive."
Brian Harman capitalized on the surprising sunshine earlier in the day, playing a bogey-free round of 65 to position himself just two shots off the pace. He shares third place with Li Haotong, who carded a 67.
Others in the field find themselves five or more shots behind the leader, including Rory McIlroy. Playing in his native Northern Ireland, McIlroy posted a respectable 69 but lost ground due to the strong play of those ahead of him.
"I’ve been somewhat close to my best over the first two days in little bits here and there," McIlroy reflected. "I’m going to need to have it all under control and have it sort of all firing over the weekend to make a run."
As the Open Championship heads into the weekend, all eyes are on Scheffler. With his consistent performance and calm demeanor, he’s set a daunting target for the rest of the field.
