Powerful Earthquakes Hit Russia’s Kamchatka, Tsunami Alert Issued

A series of powerful earthquakes struck off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Sunday, prompting a tsunami alert for nearby regions.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the initial quake measured magnitude 6.6 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the ocean floor. Shortly after, the area experienced additional strong tremors, with the largest recorded at magnitude 7.2.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) issued a tsunami warning, stating that “hazardous tsunami waves are possible” within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, affecting coastal areas in the Pacific Ocean off the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay alert and follow instructions from local authorities. The situation is developing, and emergency services are monitoring for any potential impact from tsunami waves.
