Ceasefire Talks Set to Resume as Israel Reviews Hamas Proposal

Ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas are expected to resume next week after Israel reviews Hamas’ latest response to a truce proposal, according to a high-ranking Egyptian security official.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Xinhua on Friday that during recent talks in Doha—mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States—Hamas raised the “ceiling” of its demands. This prompted mediators to request revisions to ensure the proposal could gain Israel’s approval.

Key sticking points reportedly include Hamas’ request for the release of specific Palestinian figures and details regarding the roadmap for an Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza.

Hamas also called for the opening of the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid—a point that is still under Israeli consideration, the source added.

On Thursday, U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff accused Hamas of showing “a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire” following its latest proposal.

In response, Hamas expressed “astonishment” at the envoy’s comments, reaffirming its commitment to the diplomatic process aimed at securing a ceasefire agreement.

The Israeli military campaign in Gaza, launched in October 2023 after a deadly Hamas-led attack on Israel, has resulted in the deaths of more than 59,210 Palestinians.
