In the coastal city of Sanya, Hainan Province, a unique spectacle unfolds as athletes race not just against time but in perfect harmony with each other. At the 12th National Traditional Games, teams of three are strapped into a single pair of oversized wooden board shoes, competing in the ancient sport of board-shoe racing.
Originating from the Zhuang ethnic group in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, board-shoe racing dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Legend tells of a renowned heroine who used this sport to train soldiers, instilling discipline and unity. Today, it has transcended its roots, attracting participants from across China, including northern provinces.
This year, 348 athletes forming 30 teams from various ethnic groups have come together to showcase not just their physical prowess but the essence of teamwork. The races feature men’s and women’s events spanning 60 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters, along with 2×100 meters relays and a mixed 4×100 meters relay.
