China Issues Reports on 2024 Research Hotspots and Emerging Frontiers

China Reveals Top Research Trends Shaping Our Future

China has just released two insightful reports highlighting the hottest research trends and emerging scientific frontiers expected to shape the world in 2024.

Jointly published by the Institutes of Science and Development and the National Science Library under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Clarivate, the reports aim to map out global scientific and technological trends and predict future breakthroughs.

The first report, titled “2024 Research Fronts“, is based on 13,318 research frontiers from the Essential Science Indicators database. It highlights 110 active or rapidly developing hot frontiers and 15 emerging frontiers across 11 highly integrated disciplines, including agricultural sciences, botany and zoology; ecology and environmental science; earth science; clinical medicine; biological sciences; chemistry and materials science; physics; astronomy and astrophysics; mathematics; information science; and economics and psychology.

The second report, “2024 Research Fronts: Active Fields, Leading Countries/Regions“, evaluates the performance of countries and regions such as China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Japan. Among the 125 key frontiers, the United States leads with 71 frontiers ranked first, constituting 56.8% of the total. China ranks first in 39 frontiers, accounting for 31.2%. The UK has four frontiers ranked first, while Germany and France each have one.

According to Pan Jiaofeng, president of the Institutes of Science and Development, “The reports show that AI-enabled scientific research, next-generation high-performance communications, future energy, addressing climate change, and improving human health and well-being have become key areas of scientific exploration.”

These reports not only highlight the current state of global scientific research but also provide valuable insights for future innovations. For young people around the world, especially in the Global South, understanding these trends can open up new opportunities in education and careers, inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators.
