At the forefront of the fight against global poverty and hunger, China and Brazil are joining forces to make a significant impact. As Brazil hosts this year’s G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, the nation is prioritizing the urgent issues of poverty, hunger, and inequality, creating new opportunities for cooperation with China.
Both China and Brazil have made remarkable strides in reducing poverty within their own borders. China successfully lifted 98.99 million rural residents out of absolute poverty by 2020 through its “Targeted Poverty Alleviation” strategy. This monumental achievement has accelerated global poverty reduction efforts and set a strong example for other nations.
Brazil, the largest developing country in the Western Hemisphere, has also seen significant progress. From 2003 to 2023, Brazil’s poverty rate dropped from 38.8% to 16.1%, one of the most notable reductions in the Latin American and Caribbean region. Since taking office in 2023, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has made eradicating hunger and poverty a core priority, implementing measures in food security, social assistance, and job creation.
Despite being at different stages of poverty governance, China and Brazil share a common goal: eliminating poverty and hunger to benefit their populations. Their efforts not only serve as models for the Global South but also lay the groundwork for transforming the international poverty reduction system.
As leading developing nations in the Eastern and Western hemispheres, China and Brazil are actively committed to global poverty governance. China has a long history of international cooperation on poverty reduction, providing assistance to Asian and African countries since the 1960s. Through initiatives like the Belt and Road, China aims to support developing countries in building infrastructure and integrating into the global economy.
Brazil is leveraging its role in the G20 to spotlight poverty and hunger. By establishing a global mechanism, Brazil seeks to promote cooperation among Global South countries to jointly tackle poverty. At the 2024 summit, the G20 officially launched the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, aiming to pool resources and experiences to effectively reduce hunger and poverty worldwide.
By strengthening their cooperation in poverty reduction, China and Brazil are expanding their leadership roles on the global stage. While their approaches have unique characteristics, both nations agree that development is key to eradicating poverty. Future collaborations may extend to areas like tax systems, micro-finance, women’s economic empowerment, and urban development.
Sharing experiences and working together, China and Brazil not only stand to benefit their own countries but also have the potential to positively impact global efforts against hunger and poverty, driving innovation in international poverty reduction strategies.
