The ancient town of Wuzhen in east China’s Zhejiang Province recently became the global center for internet innovation as the World Internet Conference (WIC) hosted an event highlighting outstanding cases of building a community with a shared future in cyberspace.
Marking its 11th year, the WIC continues to be a platform for international collaboration and exchange in the digital realm. The event, titled “Release and Presentation of Outstanding Cases of Jointly Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace,” showcased 13 exceptional projects selected from over 230 submissions worldwide.
First introduced by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2015 during the second WIC, the concept of “building a community with a shared future in cyberspace” aims to foster global cooperation and mutual benefit in the digital age. “It reflects our shared aspiration for the common well-being of humanity,” said Cao Shumin, deputy chief of the Cyberspace Administration of China.
The selected projects span various fields and have a direct impact on people’s daily lives. One such project is KaiOS, an operating system designed in 2016 for non-smartphones, enabling them to access internet services similar to smartphones. “The ‘Kai’ in KaiOS comes from the Chinese word meaning ‘open’,” explained Sebastien Codeville, founder and CEO of KaiOS Technologies. “We hope to open the door to the internet world for everyone.”
Another featured project, “A Taste of China,” is a collaboration between Google Arts & Culture and the World Federation of Chinese Catering Industry. It allows users globally to explore the rich stories behind Chinese cuisine, history, and culture.
Experts like Yang Zhigang, deputy director of the Education Management Information Center of China’s Ministry of Education, discussed building a global education and research system based on database platforms. Additionally, Zhang Lianchong, executive deputy director of China’s National Earth Observation Data Center, presented on enhancing global space-based disaster reduction cooperation to bridge the digital divide.
Other outstanding cases addressed topics such as international cyberspace governance, maternal and child health support, digital payments assisting small and micro enterprises, and the role of big data and AI in scam prevention. These initiatives highlight the ongoing digital transformation aimed at boosting global enterprises toward high-quality development.
The WIC’s efforts demonstrate China’s commitment to contributing wisdom and solutions to global internet development and governance.
