Shanghai’s Yangpu Waterfront, once the heart of China’s early industrial revolution, is undergoing a remarkable transformation. The area is set to become a national demonstration zone dedicated to protecting and reusing industrial heritage sites.
Located along the Huangpu River in northeast Shanghai, the Yangpu district was home to the nation’s first water, electricity, shipbuilding, and textile enterprises. This rich industrial history has left behind a legacy of iconic buildings and infrastructure.
One such landmark is the Yangshupu Power Plant, a symbol of China’s early advancements in electricity generation. Instead of facing demolition, many of these historic sites are being preserved and repurposed as part of the area’s redevelopment plans.
The revitalization of the Yangpu Waterfront not only honors China’s industrial past but also breathes new life into the community. By integrating these heritage sites into modern urban spaces, Shanghai is creating vibrant areas for culture, education, and innovation.
This transformation coincides with the seventh China International Import Expo, taking place in Shanghai from November 5 to 10. The expo underscores the city’s commitment to innovation and international collaboration, themes reflected in the redevelopment of Yangpu’s historic waterfront.
