China’s top legislator Zhao Leji visited Portugal from Thursday to Saturday, aiming to deepen ties and boost cooperation between the two nations. During his three-day visit, Zhao met with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, and Parliament Speaker José Pedro Aguiar-Branco.
In meetings with Portuguese leaders, Zhao expressed China’s readiness to expand collaboration in areas like artificial intelligence, clean energy, technology innovation, and cultural exchanges. He emphasized the importance of mutual respect and equality, stating, “China and Portugal are good friends who respect and trust each other. We are reliable partners for common development and close companions in learning from each other’s civilizations.”
President Rebelo de Sousa welcomed Zhao and conveyed his warm greetings to Chinese President Xi Jinping. Highlighting the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, he said, “Portugal is willing to enhance high-level exchanges with China and strengthen cooperation in trade, new energy, marine economy, and digital economy.”
Prime Minister Montenegro noted the importance of China as an economic partner. “We attach great importance to attracting Chinese investments and look forward to more exchanges in science and technology, marine economy, culture, and sports,” he remarked. Both sides agreed on the significance of strengthening dialogue between Europe and China, with Portugal expressing willingness to play an active role.
During talks with Parliament Speaker Aguiar-Branco, Zhao emphasized the role of legislative bodies in fostering cooperation. He expressed hope for deeper exchanges between the two parliaments to provide legal guarantees for promoting bilateral cooperation across various areas and to create a fair and non-discriminatory business environment. Aguiar-Branco responded positively, stating, “Our countries adhere to mutual respect, openness, and win-win cooperation, achieving positive results in various fields.”
Zhao also highlighted the success of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy in Macao over the past 25 years, reaffirming China’s commitment to supporting Macao’s integration into national development. He expressed willingness to further consolidate cooperation with Portugal using Macao as a platform.
The visit underscores both nations’ dedication to strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership and injecting positive energy into China-European Union relations.
