Moscow, Russia – Russia launched extensive overnight attacks on Ukraine in retaliation for Kyiv’s use of U.S.-supplied ATACMS ballistic missiles against Russian forces, escalating tensions in the ongoing conflict.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the strikes were a direct response to Ukraine’s recent missile attacks on Russian-held territories. This marks a significant escalation, as it’s one of the first times Russia has acknowledged such extensive retaliation.
“We will respond proportionally to any threats against our nation,” Putin stated during a press briefing. “The use of long-range Western-made missiles by Ukraine on our territory cannot go unanswered.”
The Russian attacks targeted critical energy infrastructure across nine Ukrainian regions, causing widespread power outages. Ukraine’s state grid operator, Ukrenergo, reported significant damage, leading to emergency power cuts throughout the country.
Ukraine recently confirmed the deployment of the U.S.-provided Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), striking Russian airfields and supply lines. The introduction of these long-range missiles has shifted the dynamics on the battlefield, enabling Ukraine to hit targets previously out of reach.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s retaliation, emphasizing the need for continued international support. “We stand firm in defending our homeland,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly address. “Russia’s aggressive actions only strengthen our resolve to protect our sovereignty and seek peace.”
The escalation raises concerns about further international involvement. Putin accused Western nations of direct involvement in the conflict by supplying advanced weaponry to Ukraine. He hinted at the possibility of targeting decision-making centers in Kyiv if the attacks on Russian territory continue.
Global leaders expressed alarm over the intensifying conflict. President Zelenskyy held discussions with NATO officials and leaders from allied nations to coordinate a response and urge for increased support.
The conflict, now in its second year, shows no signs of abating. The international community watches closely, fearing that continued escalation could have broader implications for regional stability.
