Lee Hsien Loong Backs Lawrence Wong to Lead Singapore’s Ruling Party

Singapore’s political landscape is gearing up for a significant change as current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has announced his support for Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to take over as the leader of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). This move positions Wong as the likely successor to lead both the party and the nation in the future.

During the PAP Conference on Sunday, Lee, who has served as the party’s secretary-general, revealed his intention to propose Wong as the next secretary-general to the new central executive committee. “I will continue to serve in the central executive committee in a supporting and advisory role,” Lee stated, signaling a gradual transition of leadership.

Lawrence Wong, who was elected deputy secretary-general in 2022, expressed his commitment to guiding the PAP into a new era. “We will continue to refresh ourselves to better meet the needs of a changing society,” Wong said. He emphasized the party’s dedication to upholding core values such as honesty, integrity, and incorruptibility.

Looking ahead to the next general election, Wong urged party members to “work hard for every vote and win the mandate to govern.” His remarks highlight the PAP’s focus on engaging with the public and addressing the evolving needs of Singaporeans.

The People’s Action Party, founded in 1954, has been the ruling party of Singapore since the country’s independence in 1965. The proposed leadership change marks a significant moment in Singapore’s political history as the nation prepares for a new generation of leadership.
