From New York to Xiangtan: An American’s Love Affair with China

American filmmaker Ana Fernandez Perez never imagined that a year in China would change her life forever. Living in bustling New York City, Ana had always been fascinated by Chinese culture. In 2009, she decided to take the leap and move to Xiangtan City in Hunan Province to teach at a local college.

Despite thinking she knew what to expect, Ana was completely amazed when she set foot in China. “I thought I had an idea about China, but living there opened my eyes,” she said. She found the people to be studious, grateful, and incredibly friendly.

During her year in Xiangtan, Ana explored the majestic mountains and rivers and tasted the unique flavors of Chinese cuisine. “Every day was an adventure,” she recalled. “I learned so much and gained experiences I’ll cherish forever.”

Even though she returned to New York, China remains a part of Ana. “What I learned in China stays with me,” she shared. “In some ways, China will always be with me.”

Ana’s journey is a testament to the lasting impact of cultural exchange. Her story inspires others to explore the world and embrace new experiences.
