24 Years in China: Colombian Vlogger Celebrates Chinese Democracy

This year marks nearly seven decades since the establishment of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s fundamental political system founded in 1954. Over the decades, the NPC has played a pivotal role in shaping China’s development and governance.

Colombian vlogger Fernando Muñoz Bernal has been living in China for 24 years, witnessing firsthand the evolution of Chinese society. As an active participant in the community, Fernando shares his unique perspective on the features and advantages of China’s system of people’s congresses.

“The NPC is not just a formal institution; it’s a platform that truly represents the people’s interests,” Fernando says. “I’ve seen how policies are discussed and implemented with the well-being of the populace in mind.”

He highlights how the system enables efficient decision-making and long-term planning. “In my years here, I’ve observed rapid development and improvements in infrastructure, education, and technology. The consistency in governance allows for sustained progress,” he adds.

Fernando believes that the NPC’s approach to democracy is tailored to China’s unique cultural and historical context. “Democracy isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. China’s system works for its people because it’s rooted in their traditions and collective goals,” he explains.

As the NPC approaches its 70th anniversary, expats like Fernando acknowledge the significance of the people’s congresses in realizing the aspirations of the Chinese people. “Being here has shown me that democracy can take different forms, and what’s important is that it serves the people’s needs,” Fernando concludes.
