The 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities of China concluded with a vibrant closing ceremony on Saturday evening in Sanya, south China’s Hainan Province. The nine-day event celebrated the rich cultural diversity and unity among China’s 56 ethnic groups.

Flags from all 35 delegations waved proudly at the Sanya Sports Center as the Games drew to a close. Chinese State Councilor Shen Yiqin officially declared the Games closed, marking the end of a festival that showcased traditional sports and performances.

“Athletes from 35 delegations competed on the same stage, demonstrating not only their strength and skill but also a profound emotional and spiritual connection,” said Gao Zhidan, director of China’s General Administration of Sport. He expressed gratitude to the athletes, staff, volunteers, and media who contributed to the success of the Games.

The event saw 6,960 athletes participate in 18 sports and three demonstration sports, highlighting traditional activities unique to China’s ethnic minorities. The Games served as a platform for cultural exchange and strengthening unity among different communities.

In a ceremonial handover, the official Games flag was passed to Li Jianzhong, vice governor of Hunan Province. Hunan will host the 13th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities in 2027. The handover was followed by an inspiring performance showcasing the culture of the next host province.

“The Games allowed us to share the fruitful achievements of ethnic unity and progress, as well as the advancement of national fitness. Let us reunite in Hunan in 2027,” Gao added, looking forward to the next chapter of this national celebration.
