China showcased its dominance at the 2024 World Table Tennis (WTT) Finals as Wang Chuqin and Wang Manyu clinched the men’s and women’s singles titles respectively.
Wang Chuqin’s Stellar Performance
In the men’s singles final, world No. 1 Wang Chuqin faced off against Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto in a highly anticipated rematch. The two last met in the 2022 WTT Cup Finals, where Wang secured a 4-2 victory.
Wang opened the match with an impressive 11-2 win, scoring 10 consecutive points. Despite Harimoto’s efforts to regain momentum, Wang’s relentless offense proved too strong. He won the next three games 11-8, 11-7, and 11-5, sealing a 4-0 victory.
“I didn’t have high expectations coming into this tournament, and I think Harimoto didn’t expect me to play at this level either,” Wang said after the match. This victory marks Wang’s third consecutive WTT Finals men’s singles title.
Wang Manyu’s First WTT Finals Title
The women’s singles final was an intense all-Chinese showdown between Wang Manyu and Chen Xingtong. Having faced each other four times this season, with Wang winning each time, the match was highly competitive.
The players exchanged games in the first six rounds, demonstrating exceptional skill in long rallies and quick exchanges. Tied at 5-5 in the decisive seventh game, Wang Manyu surged ahead with aggressive serves, ultimately winning 11-5 and clinching the title with a 4-3 victory.
“I prepared myself for a tough battle, and it truly came down to the final moments. It wasn’t easy at all, and the moment I won was both a release and a joy,” Wang Manyu shared. This triumph marks her first WTT Finals women’s singles championship.
