Global Collaboration Paves the Way for a New Era of Climate Action

UAE and China Strengthen Climate Collaboration at COP29

As the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) unfolds in Baku, Azerbaijan, global leaders are focusing on accelerating climate action. Building on the momentum from COP28 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is taking a proactive role in supporting discussions and fostering international collaboration.

His Excellency Abdulla Balalaa, the UAE’s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, emphasized the importance of global partnerships in an interview. “COP29 is a climate action opportunity to enhance our collective global ambitions further, elevate more voices and enable action,” he said. “Dialogue and international collaboration are vital for building climate resilience as we accelerate action together.”

The UAE and China, both leaders in renewable energy advancements, are strengthening their collaboration in green initiatives. Projects like the Al Dhafra Solar Power Project, where Chinese enterprises have played a key role, showcase how joint efforts can lead to significant reductions in carbon emissions. These partnerships are not only benefiting both nations but also contributing to global sustainability goals.

“Both the UAE and China are accelerating green and low-carbon development globally, with a focus on emerging economies and the Global South,” Balalaa noted. He highlighted initiatives like China’s South-South Climate Cooperation Fund and the UAE’s Global Climate Financial Center, which aim to finance climate solutions at scale.

The establishment of the Loss and Damage Fund at COP28 marked a significant milestone in supporting vulnerable nations affected by climate change. Balalaa expressed optimism about moving into the operational phase at COP29, where contributions will support anticipated project financings in 2025.

Regionally, the UAE is enhancing collaboration among Middle Eastern nations to address shared climate challenges. Initiatives such as the upcoming Regional Center of Excellence for Transforming Food Systems aim to accelerate innovation in food systems across the region.

Water resiliency is another critical focus, with the UAE employing innovative strategies for sustainable water management. Projects like the Taweelah Reverse Osmosis facility in Abu Dhabi are utilizing low-carbon technologies and renewable energy to provide high-quality water while preserving resources.

Looking ahead, the UAE and Senegal will co-host the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, bringing together diverse voices to explore ways to implement Sustainable Development Goal 6, ensuring access to safe water and sanitation for all.
