China is urging the world to come together to enhance early warning systems for climate change. Speaking at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, China’s Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang highlighted the urgent need to improve these systems to protect people from the increasing impacts of extreme weather events.
"Strengthening early warning systems for all and enhancing climate adaptation capacity have become increasingly important and urgent," Ding said. He emphasized that China is committed to working with all countries to implement the United Nations’ Early Warnings for All initiative.
Ding proposed three key steps to achieve this goal:
- Improve global risk assessment capabilities: Enhance the standardization of climate risk assessments to provide scientific support for climate governance.
- Build a global early warning network: Share technology and enhance system connectivity to improve early warning systems worldwide.
- Establish a climate adaptation partnership: China will develop a South-South cooperation project, providing meteorological equipment, early warning systems, and training to other developing countries.
Other leaders, including COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev and representatives from the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization, also addressed the meeting, emphasizing the importance of global cooperation in climate change adaptation.
During the event, China released its Action Plan on Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation (2025-2027), outlining its commitment to strengthening early warning systems and supporting other nations in this critical effort.
